Uganda will establish a transnational livestock corridor to export its premium Ankole cattle genetics across Southern Africa under a new bilateral agricultural pact.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni finalized the strategic livestock blueprint during a diplomatic engagement at Nakasero State Lodge. The President hosted a South African business delegation led by prominent entrepreneur Mr. Andile Ramaphosa. The bilateral summit centered on commercializing indigenous Ugandan cattle lineages for international agricultural markets.
The technical partnership deploys the National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC & DB) to supervise the multi-million dollar genetic venture.
According to the executive brief, the joint venture will anchor its main processing hub at the Regional Service Centre Initiative located on Namunkekera Farm in Nakaseke District. The state facility will centralize the scientific breeding, harvesting, and heavily regulated export of high-value Ankole bovine semen and embryos. The primary market targets the massive livestock economies within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) bloc.
In a concurrent development to safeguard the agricultural sector, the South African delegation tabled an infrastructure plan to combat counterfeit farming materials in Uganda.
The investors proposed the rapid construction of a modern Build-Operate-Transfer (B.O.T.) laboratory. The specialized scientific laboratory will engineered to audit local supply chains and eliminate fake agro-inputs, including fraudulent fertilizers and adulterated livestock drugs.
President Museveni officially greenlit the agro-industrial proposals, directing the Ministry of Agriculture to integrate the initiatives into the national development framework.
"Mr. Andile Ramaphosa and his team paid me a courtesy call this afternoon at Nakasero State Lodge," President Museveni stated. "They presented proposals for collaboration with NAGRC and the Regional Service Centre Initiative at Namunkekera Farm aimed at strengthening the regulated breeding, harvesting and export of Ankole cattle genetics to the SADC region and beyond. They also shared a proposal to establish a B.O.T. laboratory to help address the challenge of counterfeit agro-inputs in the country. I welcome these ideas, I thank them for their initiative. The Government will study the proposals and support initiatives that advance Uganda’s socio-economic transformation."
The strategic partnership leverages the exploding regional demand for the iconic long-horned Ankole cattle breed. The breed has become a highly lucrative luxury commodity among elite commercial ranchers across Southern Africa due to its disease resistance and premium beef profile.
Ultimately, the state expects the scientific extraction and export of elite livestock embryos to generate substantial foreign exchange while protecting domestic crop farmers through the incoming anti-counterfeit laboratory.
