President Yoweri Museveni has received the CAF President’s Outstanding Achievement Award for Uganda’s role in jointly hosting the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
He was recognised alongside Kenya’s President William Ruto and Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan for their cooperation in delivering the regional tournament.
The awards were presented at the CAF Awards 2025 in Rabat, Morocco, on November 19, 2025.
CAF praised the three leaders for supporting major infrastructure upgrades, ensuring a smooth tournament, and showing strong regional unity. The organisation said their efforts set a new standard for African football events.
Ugandan FIFA referee Shamirah Nabbadda also won Female Referee of the Year. She is widely respected on the continent and has officiated major competitions, including the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the three East African presidents showed “visionary support that elevated East Africa’s football profile globally.” He added that the success of CHAN 2024 strengthened the region’s readiness to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Kenya’s Ambassador to Morocco, Jessica Muthoni Gakinya, received President Ruto’s award on his behalf.
Morocco dominated the night, with several of its stars winning top honours. Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi was named African Player of the Year. His season included five trophies and PSG’s first Champions League title. He beat Mohamed Salah and Victor Osimhen to the award.
Al-Hilal goalkeeper Yassine Bounou won Goalkeeper of the Year, while Watford FC’s Othmane Maamma took the Young Player of the Year award.
In club football, Egypt’s Pyramids FC were recognised for winning their first CAF Champions League title after defeating Mamelodi Sundowns.
Tanzania’s Clement Francis Mzize, 21, won Goal of the Year for a long-range strike in the CAF Champions League.
