The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) will retire 19 long-serving General Officers during a state ceremony at State House, Entebbe, on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
President and Commander-in-Chief of the UPDF, General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, will preside over the ceremony.
The retiring Generals include former Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, Lt Gen Charles Otema Awany, Lt Gen Charles Angina, Maj Gen Abel Kandiho, Maj Gen Geofrey Katsigazi Tumusiime, Maj Gen Apollo Kasiita-Gowa, and Maj Gen Leopold Eric Kyanda.
The cohort also features 12 Brigadier Generals: Edson Muhanguzi, Sam Omara, Fred Zakye, Fred Rugadya Akiiki, Mike Samuel Kisame, Patrick Mwesigye, Stephen Tumwesigye Kashure, Simon Nicholas Ocan, Metland K Bitumbika, Charles Bakahumura, Charles Asiimwe Kahangire, and Cyril Mawa Muhindo.
The ceremony will conclude the nationwide August 2026 retirement exercise, which saw a total of 1,817 personnel exit active military service.
The overall retirement batch comprises 19 General Officers, 229 Senior Officers, 205 Junior Officers, and 1,364 Militants.
Senior Officers, Junior Officers, and Militants completed their official discharge ceremonies earlier in the week at the Joint Services Headquarters in Mbuya and various service formations nationwide.
Acting Director Defence Public Information, Colonel Chris Magezi, affirmed that the structured retirements reflect the institution's commitment to a transparent, honorable transition for long-serving servicemen and women.
