Gen Kainerugaba Pledges UPDF Support for Red Cross Humanitarian Work

The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, today hosted a delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) at the Special Forces Command (SFC) Headquarters.

The ICRC delegation was led by Mr. Kedir Awol Omar, Head of the ICRC Regional Delegation, and included Ms. Barbara Rizzoli, Deputy Head of Delegation, and Ms. Patricia Bako, Head of Prevention in charge of Uganda.

During the engagement, the ICRC delegation briefed the CDF on their ongoing operations, including efforts to facilitate the return of detainees (Prisoners Of War) to their home countries, restore family links, and reunite families displaced by war and conflict.

The ICRC delegation also requested the Government of Uganda to consider establishing a National Commission on International Humanitarian Law.

On his part, the CDF commended the ICRC for its decades of humanitarian work in Uganda, across the region, and globally.

Gen Kainerugaba specifically recognized the ICRC's efforts in supporting post-conflict rehabilitation and providing direct relief to victims of conflict, noting that their work significantly contributes to saving lives and reducing human suffering.

The CDF reassured the delegation of the UPDF's full commitment to providing the necessary support, access, and cooperation to enable the smooth implementation of their humanitarian mission.
