Brigadier General Paddy Ankunda Appointed Uganda’s Defence Attaché to European Union

Brigadier General Paddy Ankunda has assumed office as Uganda’s Defence Attaché to the European Union in Brussels, succeeding retiring Major General Leopold Eric Kyanda in a handover ceremony presided over by Chief of Joint Staff Lt General Jack Bakasumba.

Brigadier General Paddy Ankunda has assumed office as Uganda’s Defence Attaché to the European Union Commission headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.

The diplomatic assignment also covers bilateral defense accreditation to Belgium, France, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.

Brig Gen Ankunda formally received the instruments of office on Friday, August 14, 2026, during a handover ceremony at TISU headquarters in Kololo, Kampala.

Chief of Joint Staff UPDF Lt General Jack Bakasumba presided over the transition ceremony.

Brig Gen Ankunda succeeds Major General Leopold Eric Kyanda, who is concluding his military tour of duty.

Maj Gen Kyanda is among the 19 UPDF General Officers scheduled to retire from the armed forces at State House Entebbe on Thursday, August 20, 2026.

Senior military officials who attended the ceremony included Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security Maj General Richard Otto, Joint Staff Finance Brig Gen Robert Mugabe, and UPDF CIMIC Chief Brig Gen Michael Kibuye.
