President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has directed rural households across Busoga sub-region to abandon low-value cash crops and switch to intensive, high-yield agriculture to overcome chronic poverty driven by land fragmentation.
The President issued the directive on Wednesday in Buyende District during the thanksgiving ceremony of Minister for the Presidency Hon. Babirye Milly Babalanda at Iringa Township Primary School.
Generational land division in Busoga shrinks inherited family plots, making conventional low-yield farming economically unviable. The President told farmers that small plots require calculated, intensive agricultural models rather than expansive crop fields.
"Even if you do not do all the seven activities, as long as what you are doing is taking you out of poverty and you are doing it with calculation, ekibaaro, you can succeed," President Museveni stated.
He cautioned households against dedicating small acreages to sugarcane, rice, and tobacco, noting that these enterprises yield insufficient returns on limited land. Smallholder farmers should prioritize high-value ventures like dairy, poultry, and fish farming.
President Museveni instructed residents to channel Parish Development Model funds strictly into income-generating production rather than consumption. He also pledged a milk-cooling facility to boost dairy output in Buyende District.
During the gathering, the President promoted Deputy Resident District Commissioner Ms. Sarah Kasadha to full Resident District Commissioner for Namayingo District.
