Hundreds of residents are swarming Buginyanya NARO farm and Muyembe Health Centre IV to access free healthcare provided by the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF).
The medical outreach is part of the ongoing Field Training Exercise, codenamed OKOA MAISHA 26. This exercise launched on April 12 to test the national army's disaster response and community support capabilities. It integrates efforts from the police, prisons, and the Red Cross to strengthen local resilience.
Brigadier General Ernest Nuwagaba, the Commander Headquarter Uganda Rapid Deployment Capability, attributed the massive attendance to the bond between the army and the public. He explained that the initiative serves as a token of appreciation for civilian cooperation.
“This large turnout is a reflection of trust in the national army. This medical camp is part of our corporate social responsibility, intended to give back to the community for the trust and support they continue to extend to us,” Brig Gen Nuwagaba said.
Specialists at the camps are addressing a variety of complex health needs. Outpatient services are concentrated at the Buginyanya farm, while surgeons handle advanced cases at Muyembe.
Colonel Doctor Francis Bakahena, the UPDF Director of Public Health, noted that the teams are providing specialized screenings and dental care.
“The team is managing a wide range of conditions including minor surgeries, tuberculosis and cancer screening, eye and dental care, cervical and breast cancer screening for women, laboratory services, and general outpatient treatment,” Dr Bakahena said.
The Ministry of Health has bolstered the mission with 26 emergency workers and a blood donation unit. Mr. Edward Basenge, a ministry representative, labeled the camp a vital intervention for community health challenges.

Local leaders have welcomed the army’s presence in the district. Bulambuli Deputy District Health Officer Mr. Naimu Martin thanked the partners for their timely support.
“The exercise is progressing well, and we thank the UPDF and all partners for the work they are doing for the people of Bulambuli,” he said.
The OKOA MAISHA 26 exercise will conclude on April 25. It remains a key test for the URDC’s ability to respond to emergencies within the shortest time possible.
