Ministry of Health has started vaccinating Members of Parliament and its staff against COVID-19 virus. Clerk to Parliament, Jane Kibirige on Wednesday informed MPs and Parliamentary staff that the vaccination exercise will take place today, 25th March and Friday, 26th March.
During last week’s plenary sitting, Speaker Rebecca Kadaga announced that the vaccination exercise will cover both Members of the current 10th Parliament and MPs-elect of the 11th Parliament.
Clerk to Parliament Kibirige said that the first phase of the vaccination drive will cater for the Members of the 10th Parliament and Staff. By press time, MPs and staff including parliamentary journalists were already lining up for the jab at the parliamentary premises. About 256 MPs and staff have already vaccinated. Speaker Rebecca Kadaga urged Members to take up the exercise with seriousness. It is not clear if Kadaga will publicly take up the jab tomorrow.
Ministry of Health has since early this month embarked on the countrywide vaccination drive starting with the frontline health workers and other vulnerable groups of people. As of March 18, a total of 663,520 doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine had been distributed to all districts in the country. Uganda needs up to 45 million doses of vaccines to vaccinate a population of about 22million Ugandans.
