No new Ebola Virus Disease cases have been recorded in Uganda, since the death of the three confirmed ones early this week, the Ministry of Health has announced.
None of the 96 persons that got in contact with Ebola patients has developed symptoms of the disease. Meanwhile, active case search and death surveillance continue in health facilities and communities, as the district response team continues to investigate all alerts.
Ministry of Health declared the 6th Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Uganda on June 11, affecting Kasese District. Three of all the confirmed cases have since died. The first case was a five-year-old child with a recent history of travel to the Ebola-hit Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The child was one of the 6 people that escaped from DRC while still being monitored as suspect cases following the burial of their grandfather who succumbed to Ebola. The Child who was ill by the time he crossed into Uganda, was taken to Kagando hospital in Kasese presenting symptoms of vomiting blood, diarrhea, muscle pain, headache, fatigue, and abdominal pain.
He would later test positive for Ebola Zaire which he succumbed to on June 11. Two other members of the family, the deceased’s grandmother and his younger brother, a three-year-old also tested positive of the disease and have since died.
“As of today, there is no confirmed case in Uganda, however, two suspect cases are admitted at Bwera Ebola Treatment Unit. We have listed a cumulative total of 96 contacts for follow up,” the Ministry of Health has indicated in the latest update.
