Uganda has hosted Canadian travel executives on a familiarisation tour aimed at increasing visitor numbers and strengthening tourism partnerships.

Uganda has launched a familiarisation trip for Canadian tour operators, travel agents and media influencers as part of efforts to market the country in North America. The Uganda High Commission in Ottawa organised the visit with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, the Uganda Tourism Board and private sector partners.

A delegation of 14 senior executives from Canadian tourism companies arrived at Entebbe International Airport on April 8, 2026, ahead of the tour scheduled to run from April 9 to April 18, 2026. Ambassador Allan Kajik, Uganda’s High Commissioner to Canada, received the visitors alongside officials from the tourism and foreign affairs ministries and the Uganda Tourism Board.

Kajik said the initiative aims to raise Uganda’s profile in the Canadian market by giving industry leaders direct experience of the country’s tourism products. The programme will highlight wildlife, culture, nature and adventure tourism, with attention on community-based tourism and conservation projects that appeal to Canadian travellers.

Agnes Birungi, head of Economic and Commercial Diplomacy at the High Commission, said Uganda offers diverse tourism experiences rooted in natural beauty and cultural heritage. She noted that such immersive experiences align with the preferences of many Canadian visitors.

During the visit, the delegation will hold business meetings with local tour operators and tourism officials to develop travel packages. The itinerary includes visits to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Source of the Nile in Jinja.

Margaret Kafeero, head of Public Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the tour is expected to strengthen partnerships and support growth in the tourism sector. Officials also said visitor numbers from Canada rose from 7,542 in 2022 to 9,688 in 2024, a 28 per cent increase.

Kigozi described Canada as an important source market, noting that Canadian tourists often prefer longer stays and high-end experiences that boost tourism revenue. Uganda now targets more than 20,000 Canadian visitors by 2028.

The tour is expected to increase awareness of Uganda’s attractions, support new travel packages and strengthen destination marketing in Canada and the wider North American market.
