Senegal edged Nigeria 1-0 in a tightly contested Group B clash at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, marking a dramatic night at Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar City.

The match, played before an electric crowd, was the first major CHAN fixture hosted on the island, drawing passionate support from local fans and regional dignitaries.

Despite the high stakes and star billing, the opening 45 minutes saw little action. Both teams played cautiously, with much of the play restricted to midfield battles. Clear chances were rare, and the first half ended goalless.

The second half brought renewed intensity. Nigeria pressed forward, with Ismaila Sarki and Taiwo Abdulrafiu leading the charge in attack. However, Senegal’s defense, commanded by captain Cheikh Diouf, held strong and limited Nigeria’s opportunities.

The breakthrough came in the 75th minute when a defensive error by Nigeria gifted Senegal the winner. A poor back pass was intercepted by Cheikh Christian Gomis, who calmly slotted past goalkeeper Mustapha Aliko to hand the Lions of Teranga the lead.

Nigeria responded by throwing bodies forward in search of an equalizer. But Senegal managed the game well in the closing stages, with Lamin Gueye excelling in midfield to disrupt Nigeria’s rhythm and preserve the lead.

The result places Senegal in a strong position to qualify for the knockout rounds, while Nigeria now faces a must-win scenario in their final group match.

Beyond the action on the pitch, the night was historic for Zanzibar. Hosting its first CHAN match, the island embraced the occasion with color, energy, and pride, offering a vibrant atmosphere that showcased its readiness for international events.
