Uganda has released 13 more Rwandan nationals detained in the country for various criminal charges.
The 13 were paraded before the Rwandan authorities by Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kutesa on Tuesday. The ceremony was held at Serena Hotel, Kampala on Tuesday. Minister Kutesa reveals that those released among others include; Hyacinthe Dusengeyezu, the wife of Rene Rutagungira, a retired senior member of the Rwandan army released last month.
Kutesa explained that Dusengeyezu was among those rearrested, and that they faced a number of charges related to security. He revealed that some were arrested in possession of fire arms. Kutesa explained that some were arrested months ago and sent back to Rwanda but they returned.
Kutesa re-emphasized that the release was yet another “sign of good will” and an indication of Uganda’s commitment to the Angola peace summit.
The release comes just days to the meeting between Presidents Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda. The meeting scheduled for Friday will take place at the Katuna border area. The Katuna meeting is one of the five resolutions that the Heads of State arrived at during the third round of talks in Luanda, Angola early this month.
Dubbed the Quadripartite Summit, the talks aim at restoring peace between neighbours Rwanda and Uganda. The talks are facilitated by Angola's President Joao Lourenco, while DRC's Felix Tshisekedi is an observer.
