The Government of Uganda on Wednesday launched Phase V of the National Backbone Infrastructure (NBI) to expand high-speed fibre connectivity and strengthening digital services nationwide.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni presided over the launch alongside the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, and the Executive Director of NITA-U, Dr. Hatwib Mugasa.
The new phase will connect 20 government institutions in Kanungu, including Kanungu Police, Nyakatare Technical Institute, Kanungu Town Council, and Kihihi Health Centre. Officials said the expansion will deliver reliable high-speed internet, cut communication costs, and improve access to digital public services.
They noted that extending the national fibre grid to Kanungu will promote digital inclusion, create employment opportunities, and boost service delivery across key sectors such as health, education, security, and local administration.
With Phase V now underway, Kanungu joins other regions integrated into Uganda’s national fibre network, a move expected to accelerate innovation and enhance government efficiency.
NITA-U also thanked its staff and partners for supporting the country’s digital transformation efforts.
