President Yoweri Museveni and his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah El-Sisi witnessed the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) that will benefit both countries economically and strengthen diplomatic ties.
"Several Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) were signed across various sectors, including trade and investment, agriculture, water management, community development, and diplomatic engagement," President Museveni said in a statement posted on X.
President Museveni commended Egypt for its support in providing Uganda with foot-and-mouth disease vaccines and welcomed the decision to establish a vaccine factory in Uganda.
"Economic cooperation should be at the core of Africa's progress. I am pleased that His Excellency is prioritising business initiatives," he said. "Together, we will explore ways to produce, trade, create jobs, and develop electricity and irrigation for our people."
President Museveni arrived in Cairo yesterday at El-Sisi's invitation. "I want to thank His Excellency Abdel Fattah El-Sisi for inviting us to engage in productive dialogue. It has been a long time since I last visited Egypt. Uganda and the Great Lakes region have been historically linked to Egypt through the Nile River," President Museveni said. "Our political relationship with Egypt began to strengthen after 1952, when His Excellency Nasser assumed leadership in Egypt."
The two leaders addressed the future of the Nile during their discussions.
"We must approach the issue of the Nile with a broad perspective. Sometimes, the challenge lies in our approach," he said. "Rather than focusing solely on historical rights, we should consider the global needs of all Nile Basin countries."
Museveni said the goal should be prosperity for all, access to electricity for all, irrigation for all, and clean drinking water for all. "By including these objectives in our framework, we can employ the most scientific and fair methods to achieve them," he said.
