The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has welcomed the return of hundreds of party historicals in a strategic move to strengthen grassroots unity and mentorship ahead of Uganda’s 2026 general elections.

NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong received the group at the party headquarters, describing them as “seasoned party cadres” who played a pivotal role during the Movement system before Uganda adopted multiparty politics.

“These are seasoned party cadres who were instrumental during the Movement era. Many have since retired but continue to play active roles within their communities on a voluntary basis,” Todwong said.

He revealed that the historicals had raised concerns about the party's recent primaries and expressed a strong desire to help reconcile and guide members, especially at the district level.

“They’ve reorganized themselves as a supportive force committed to strengthening party unity at the district level and mentoring current leaders, many of whom lack a deep ideological understanding,” he added.

Todwong explained that the group’s return is motivated by their concern over the erosion of ideological clarity among some current leaders. “They aim to support the party through mobilisation, conflict resolution, and instilling a sense of purpose in our local-level leaders, reminding them why they serve and helping them reconnect with the needs of the people,” he said.

He also pledged to brief NRM National Chairman, President Yoweri Museveni, about the development, noting the veterans’ potential to positively impact the party’s strategic direction.

“Personally, I believe these veterans can play a critical role in various aspects of the party’s work. They joined out of deep conviction and carry with them a wealth of revolutionary experience. Their continued voluntary service is driven by a desire to preserve the legacy they helped build,” Todwong noted.

On internal petitions stemming from party primaries, Todwong reaffirmed the party's commitment to due process. “As we’ve consistently said, neither the party secretariat nor the NRM electoral commission interferes with the tribunal’s processes. The tribunal operates independently, and we, too, await its rulings,” he said.

Maj. (Rtd) Pollar Awich, NRM’s Director for External Affairs, applauded the returning veterans for prioritising mentorship. He stressed the importance of guiding younger members in leadership roles.

“Young people, especially those aspiring for leadership roles, need mentoring from those who truly understand the party’s foundation. This mentorship initiative is crucial for preparing youth to lead at various levels—local council, district, and even national,” Awich stated.

The return of the historicals is viewed as a timely boost to the NRM’s mobilisation efforts, as the party seeks to reaffirm its ideological roots and consolidate support across the country in the lead-up to the 2026 elections.
