Uganda and Zimbabwe have reaffirmed their long-standing defence partnership as senior military officials from both nations met in Kampala to discuss strategic cooperation and regional security.
The Chief of Joint Staff of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), Major General Jack Bakasumba, hailed the visit by a delegation from the Zimbabwe National Defence University (ZNDU) as a testament to the strong bilateral ties between the two countries.
“We’re privileged that you included Uganda in your study tour. Your visit is deeply appreciated and not taken lightly,” Maj Gen Bakasumba said during a meeting at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs headquarters in Mbuya.
The Zimbabwean team comprised 22 course participants and academic staff, led by Brigadier General Francis Chakauya. The visit was part of the ZNDU’s regional study tour aimed at understanding Uganda’s defence operations and strategic development.
Maj Gen Bakasumba credited Uganda’s progress in military operations and institutional stability to the visionary leadership of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, describing him as a Pan-Africanist whose ideology has shaped UPDF’s growth.
“His guidance has allowed us to grow and accomplish numerous successful operations. It formed a solid base for our training and operational capabilities,” he said.
He highlighted Uganda’s commitment to regional peace efforts, particularly the UPDF’s involvement in Somalia under the African Union Peace Mission.
“Although we don’t border Somalia, our clear ideology and belief in African-driven solutions compel us to continue playing a role in peacekeeping there,” Maj Gen Bakasumba emphasized.
Brig Gen Chakauya commended Uganda for its hospitality and strong Pan-African values.
“We chose Uganda because of the exceptional relations we enjoy—a relationship rooted in a shared commitment to national advancement. We look forward to its continued growth,” he said.
The Zimbabwean delegation’s visit aimed to gain insights into Uganda’s defence policies, training systems, and peace operations, aligning with broader goals of enhancing African security through collaboration.
Also present were several senior UPDF officers, including Maj Gen Don Nabasa (Joint Staff Policy and Strategy), Maj Gen Felix Kulayigye (Defence Public Information), Brig Gen Godwin Karugaba (Logistics), Brig Gen Robert Mugabe (Finance), Brig Gen Wycliffe Keita (Training and Doctrine), and Brig Gen Abdul Rugumayo (Deputy Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security).
The visit underscored the shared commitment between Uganda and Zimbabwe to foster military professionalism, strengthen regional defence ties, and promote African-led peace and security solutions.
