Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director, Hajjati Sharifah Buzeki, has directed road contractors in Kampala to fast-track ongoing works and prioritize the safety of all road users.
Buzeki made the remarks during an inspection tour, where she visited major construction sites including Sir Apollo Kaggwa Road, Salama Road, and Seventh and Eighth Streets in the Industrial Area.
At Sir Apollo Kaggwa Road, Buzeki acknowledged visible progress but raised concerns about blocked access to businesses and homes due to ongoing curb installations. “You need to construct walkways to ease pedestrian movement and ensure road user safety,” she advised contractors on site.
Contractors reported disruptions caused by human activity during working hours but assured Buzeki of their commitment to completing the projects on time. She pledged KCCA’s support, including initiating public sensitization campaigns to foster cooperation with construction teams.
On Salama Road, which spans approximately 8 kilometers, only 1 kilometer has received the first layer of tarmac so far. Drainage construction is ongoing. Residents urged contractors to spray water to reduce dust, which is affecting businesses and public health. Buzeki directed contractors to heed these concerns.
The roadworks fall under the $288 million Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCRRP), a government-funded initiative aimed at modernizing urban infrastructure. The project, which began in 2021, targets the upgrade of 40 roads across Kampala, covering over 100 kilometers.
Other KCRRP components include 123 kilometers of non-motorized transport facilities, upgraded traffic junctions, parking for commercial vehicles, public toilets, bus depots, and markets for women vendors. The project also includes the installation of energy-efficient street lighting and general city beautification.
Buzeki reaffirmed KCCA’s mission to build a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive city. “We ask for residents’ patience and cooperation as we continue to transform Kampala’s infrastructure,” she said.
The Executive Director was accompanied by a team of KCCA officials during the evening inspection.
