Lieutenant General Sam Okiding, Deputy Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), has commended the 4 Infantry Division for its high level of discipline and precision as the unit prepares for the upcoming Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Drill Competition.

Gen Okiding delivered the praise during his recent inspection of the division headquarters in Gulu, where he witnessed the troops’ parade exercises. He noted that their coordination and readiness reflected the growing commitment to excellence within the UPDF.

“Parade is not a form of punishment, but rather a demonstration of readiness,” Gen Okiding told the troops, urging them to treat drill practice as a source of pride and a clear measure of discipline.

The competition, scheduled for 12 May 2025 at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala, will run under the theme “Disciplined Force for a Better Uganda.” The event is designed to promote teamwork, operational effectiveness, and professionalism across UPDF formations.

Gen Okiding reaffirmed the leadership’s commitment to supporting the drills committee and all participating units. He encouraged both commanders and soldiers to focus on modernizing their skills to meet the demands of national and regional security tasks.

The national contest will feature sword and crop stick drills, foot drills, and brass band performances.

To strengthen preparations, the UPDF has deployed 85 experienced instructors drawn from senior and junior officer ranks, along with staff from the General Headquarters, to mentor the competing teams.

During his visit, Gen Okiding was accompanied by Brig Gen Jackson Kayanja, Deputy Commander of the 4 Infantry Division, Col Innocent Tukashaba, and other senior staff officers.
