Security officials from the United Nations and Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the safety of mission personnel and facilities in Somalia.
During a high-level briefing held on April 4, 2025, at the UN Headquarters in Mogadishu, senior representatives from the UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) and the UPDF’s UN Guard Unit XI discussed strategies to improve collaboration and operational readiness in safeguarding the mission area.
The meeting was chaired by the UN Principal Security Adviser, Joseph Katuramu, who emphasized the importance of joint planning and supervision among security forces.
“As leaders, we must continually manage, supervise, and oversee our forces to ensure that the security of all posts is maintained. This is vital for ensuring the safety of those we support,” said Katuramu.
He called for increased unity and information sharing among stakeholders, stressing that cooperation is key to mission success.
Deputy Security Adviser, John Douglas, commended the UPDF troops for their vigilance and professionalism under the UN Guard Unit.

Commander of UN Guard Unit XI, Lt Col Peter Ruyogoza Barigye, welcomed the meeting as a timely intervention and pledged continued cooperation. “This engagement is crucial for strengthening security within the mission. We are committed to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure the safety of the UN compound and its personnel,” he said.
