The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving waste management while supporting the upcoming Kabaka Birthday Run.
On Tuesday, April 1, 2025, KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki led a delegation to Bulange Mengo, where she handed over UGX 7 million towards the event. She emphasized the urgent need for proper waste disposal in Kampala and called on residents to embrace responsible waste management.
“We want Kampala to be a healthy and clean city, and that starts with proper waste management,” Buzeki said. “Separate biodegradable from non-biodegradable waste to enhance effective waste management.”
She urged Buganda Kingdom to support KCCA’s initiatives and stressed that keeping the city clean is a shared responsibility. “Kampala belongs to all of us, and it is our duty to maintain a clean and livable environment,” she added.
Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga acknowledged the waste challenges caused by urbanization, attributing them to traditional rural waste disposal habits. “Many of us in Kampala grew up in villages where waste disposal was informal. However, in an urban setting, we must adapt, just as we have embraced wearing suits and ties,” he said.
He emphasized that proper waste disposal improves urban health and enhances public spaces, green parks, and healthcare facilities.
The Kabaka’s 70th Birthday Run, themed “Men for Good Health to Save the Girl Child and the Fight Against HIV/AIDS 2030,” is set for Sunday, April 6, 2025. While the run focuses on HIV/AIDS awareness, it will also promote waste management awareness among Kampala residents.
Buzeki encouraged city dwellers to participate in the event and use it as a platform to champion environmental responsibility.
The Kabaka Birthday Run is one of Uganda’s biggest annual events, drawing thousands of participants. With KCCA’s involvement, this year’s edition will also serve as a rallying call for a cleaner Kampala.
