The Diocese of West Buganda installed Rt. Rev. Gaster Nsereko as its seventh bishop, succeeding Bishop Henry Katumba Tamale, who retired after eight years of service.
The installation ceremony took place at St. Paul’s Church in Kako, Masaka City, and was attended by hundreds of Christians, religious leaders, and government officials.
Bishop Samuel Bogere Egesa of Bukedi Diocese led the installation service, using his sermon to condemn corruption in Uganda. “Some people have climbed the trees of corruption, and this is eating away our nation. It is our responsibility as leaders to stand firm against this,” he stated. He urged leaders to serve with honesty and commitment.
The Most Rev. Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, presided over the consecration. He reminded Bishop Nsereko that his calling is to serve, not to seek status. “You are called to follow in the footsteps of Christ, not to become a boss,” Archbishop Kaziimba said.
He encouraged the new bishop to build on his predecessor’s work. “Bishop Katumba’s leadership was marked by dedication and progress. Continue with the projects he started, as completing them will benefit the diocese.”
In his first message as bishop, Rt. Rev. Nsereko pledged to serve God and the people of West Buganda with devotion. He called on the government to improve access to clean water, better markets for farmers, and essential services.
President Yoweri Museveni, represented by Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Canon Ruth Nankabirwa, donated a new vehicle to support Bishop Nsereko’s ministry. Nankabirwa urged Christians to engage in government development programs, saying, “Even Jesus worked alongside his father, Joseph, a carpenter. We encourage religious leaders to promote social and economic growth.”
Retiring Bishop Katumba Tamale reflected on his time in office, thanking God for guiding him through his tenure. “It has been an honor to serve as bishop. I am grateful to have completed my mission,” he said.
Bishop Nsereko’s installation marks a new chapter for the Diocese of West Buganda, with expectations of strengthened faith and development.
