Uganda’s prepaid electricity system, formerly known as "Yaka," has been rebranded as "Light" following the exit of Umeme from the country’s power distribution sector. The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has officially taken over the electricity distribution network and outlined its strategy for a seamless transition.

UEDCL Managing Director Paul Mwesigwa assured the public that service delivery will continue without disruption. "This transition has been carefully planned, and we are committed to maintaining reliable power supply while improving service delivery," he said.

The government’s decision not to renew Umeme’s 20-year concession, which ended on February 28, 2025, placed the national grid fully under UEDCL’s control. The company, which has managed rural electricity distribution alongside Umeme for years, is now Uganda’s sole electricity distributor.

UEDCL has a track record of successful takeovers, having previously assumed control of five regional concessions, including Ferdisult Engineering Limited, Bundibugyo Energy Cooperative Society, and Kilembe Investments Limited. These acquisitions were backed by strong corporate governance, financial sustainability, and investment in digital technology.

To ensure continuity, UEDCL has retained Umeme’s existing service centers and operational systems. Prepaid electricity units purchased before the transition remain valid, and payments can still be made through telecom and banking platforms.

In a significant workforce integration, UEDCL has absorbed over 2,200 former Umeme employees. "Many of them originally worked with UEDCL before moving to Umeme in 2005. We welcome them back," Mwesigwa said.

The government has provided financial resources to facilitate the transition, including funds for asset acquisition and network upgrades. Regulatory support from the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) has also ensured that tariff structures and sustainability measures remain intact.

Mwesigwa emphasized UEDCL’s commitment to efficiency, reliability, and customer service. "We are focused on connecting more customers, improving power reliability, and ensuring Uganda’s electricity sector supports national development," he stated.

With the takeover complete and the introduction of "Light" as the new name for Uganda’s prepaid electricity system, UEDCL now moves forward as the country’s sole distributor of electricity, marking a new chapter in the energy sector.
