In 2018, David Irumba started with just three acres of coffee in Hoima City. Today, he runs a thriving agribusiness empire, employing 50 workers and generating millions in revenue.
His success has drawn national attention, including a visit from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who pledged government support to expand his operations.
From Humble Beginnings to a Booming Agribusiness
Irumba, the proprietor of Keywood Group Limited, has built a diversified farm in Bulera East Cell, Kyentale Ward, Hoima East Division. His poultry business alone houses 50,000 birds, producing 500 trays of eggs daily—earning him UGX 150 million per month.
In just five months, his annual revenue is projected to hit UGX 1 billion. His coffee enterprise also brings in an additional UGX 1.6 million per month.
During his visit, President Museveni praised Irumba’s achievements, linking his success to the government's push for economic empowerment.
Government Support Fuels Growth
Irumba credited his growth to Uganda Development Bank (UBD), which provided startup financing, as well as government investments in infrastructure, such as electricity and improved roads. He urged Ugandans to take advantage of available government economic programs, including the Parish Development Model (PDM).
“Many people ignore the opportunities the government has created. I am proof that they work,” he said.
Irumba also requested additional support to enhance his operations, including an egg-breaking machine, a complete feed mixer, and a delivery truck for distribution.
Presidential Support for Expansion
In response, President Museveni pledged direct support by contributing:
- A feed mixer worth UGX 80 million
- An egg-breaking machine worth UGX 120 million
- A truck for egg transportation
- He also directed the Ministry of Agriculture to address the farm’s water supply needs to support poultry and zero-grazing cattle farming.
A Model for Future Farmers
Vice President Jessica Alupo commended Irumba’s achievements, calling them a testament to President Museveni’s vision of a commercialized economy.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja highlighted the government’s commitment to infrastructure development, including the Hoima International Airport, which is expected to boost agribusiness and trade in the region.
Irumba now plans to turn his farm into a model demonstration center to train and inspire more farmers in Bunyoro.
His journey—from a small-scale coffee farmer to a multi-million-shilling agribusiness leader—proves that with the right mindset, resources, and government support, Ugandans can transform their lives and communities.
