As Muslims observe Ramadan and Christians mark Lent, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki has reassured residents of KCCA’s commitment to improving the city’s infrastructure and cleanliness.
In an address on March 6, 2025, Buzeki emphasized the need for patience and cooperation as major roadworks and waste management reforms take shape. She highlighted several ongoing projects, including the Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCRRP), which covers over 89 kilometers of road upgrades, and the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Urban Development Program (GKMA-UDP), currently improving 19.85 kilometers of roads.
“We remain steadfast in our mission to enhance the city’s infrastructure. Although the ongoing civil works may result in temporary disruptions, we appeal to all road users to exercise patience,” Buzeki said.
She urged contractors to speed up construction while ensuring quality and safety. During an inspection of the Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project, she challenged them over project delays and called for adherence to timelines.
Beyond road development, Buzeki underscored the importance of waste management. She encouraged residents to adopt responsible waste disposal habits, including sorting garbage at the source.
“This city belongs to all of us. Let’s manage waste responsibly by embracing the principles of reuse, recycling, and reduction,” she advised.
KCCA has installed smart bins across the city and will deploy more to facilitate proper disposal. Buzeki reminded residents that littering is a punishable offense under the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Act 2019, with penalties including up to 10 years in prison.
Acknowledging the spiritual significance of the season, she extended best wishes to both Muslim and Christian communities.
“On behalf of KCCA, I extend my heartfelt best wishes to our Muslim brothers and sisters during this blessed month of Ramadan and to our Christian community as they observe Lent,” she said.
She urged residents to use this time for introspection, unity, and acts of kindness.
“This sacred period serves as a reminder of the values of faith, togetherness, and compassion. As we fast, pray, and seek spiritual renewal, let us also seize this moment to strengthen the fabric of our community,” she added.
Buzeki reaffirmed KCCA’s commitment to accelerating service delivery and ensuring a city where all residents can thrive.
“May this holy season bring you tranquility, blessings, and fulfillment. Ramadan Mubarak and Lenten Blessings to you all!” she concluded.
