The Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO) has launched a Data Protection and Privacy Compliance Toolkit to help organizations adhere to the Data Protection and Privacy Act, Cap 97. The toolkit, unveiled at Sheraton Kampala Hotel, provides businesses with practical tools to assess data protection practices, identify gaps, and take corrective measures.
Developed with support from Financial Sector Deepening Uganda (FSDU), the toolkit offers templates and step-by-step guidance to simplify regulatory compliance. As Uganda’s digital economy grows, businesses increasingly rely on digital platforms to deliver services, making data protection more critical than ever.
Speaking at the launch, National Data Protection Director Stella Alibateese described the toolkit as a "roadmap to compliance and a catalyst for change." She emphasized that it will help organizations "understand and implement the requirements of the Data Protection and Privacy Act, Cap 97."
FSDU's Director of Programs, Joseph Lutwama, highlighted the toolkit’s role in securing personal data within the financial sector. "For Ugandans to access financial services, they must share personal data. A safe and conducive regulatory environment is essential to protect this information," he said.
Representing the National Information Technology Authority-Uganda (NITA-U) Board, Dr. Annabella Habinka called the toolkit a "significant milestone" that aligns with PDPO’s vision of a data protection-conscious Uganda. She urged organizations to integrate data privacy as a core value rather than just a compliance requirement.
Following the launch, PDPO commenced a two-day training of trainers’ workshop to equip professionals from key sectors with the skills to implement and promote data protection practices in their organizations.
Businesses and stakeholders are encouraged to adopt the toolkit to enhance compliance and safeguard consumer data.
