The media fraternity is mourning the untimely death of former Daily Monitor security reporter Risdel Kasasira, who tragically passed away in a car accident on Friday afternoon, January 3, 2025.
The accident occurred at around 1:00 pm along the Kashagama-Lyantonde Road in Lyantonde District. According to police, the vehicle, a Toyota Corolla Fielder (UBK 851Y), veered off the road and overturned into a swamp at Kalagala village.
The car was being driven by Kasasira’s wife, who reportedly lost control of the vehicle. Kasasira, who was travelling with his family, succumbed to drowning. The other occupants sustained injuries and were rushed to Lyantonde Hospital for treatment.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues and friends, honouring the life and legacy of the esteemed journalist. Former NBS TV investigative journalist Solomon Serwanjja shared on X: "Kitalo nyo nyo ekya Risdel Kasasira. Risdel died in a road accident along Masaka Road."
Maurice Mugisha, the Deputy Managing Director of UBC TV, wrote: "My deepest sympathies go out to the family of Risdel Kasasira who died in a car crash today. Our thoughts and prayers are with you."
Sheilah Nduhukire, a former colleague at Nation Media, paid an emotional tribute: "RIP my brother and former colleague at NMG, @risdelk. There was a time when security and political news in Uganda was truly credible only if it had a Risdel Kasasira byline! That’s the level of trust and respect Ris built amongst his peers. Go well, ‘Corporal General’ as we fondly referred to each other. May the Lord shield and protect your young family and everyone you touched through your incomparable work."
Solomon Kaweesi, another colleague, praised Kasasira's impact on journalism: "As a security reporter for the Daily Monitor, you shed light on the darkest corners of our society, holding those in power accountable and giving voice to the voiceless. Your legacy will live on through the countless lives you touched, the stories you told, and the impact you made. You will be deeply missed, but your memory will continue to inspire us to seek truth and hold power accountable. Rest in peace, brother."
The late journalist’s body has been transported to the Lyantonde Hospital mortuary, while police have launched investigations into the accident.
