President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has directed the Ministry of Finance to release funds to address disasters and relocate communities living in high-risk areas. The decision follows recent landslides in Bulambuli District that have claimed 28 lives, with rescue efforts ongoing.
Permanent Secretary to the Treasury, Ramathan Ggoobi, announced the release of UGX 50 billion for disaster response. “The President has directed us to find the funds needed to move people, resettle them, and provide basic amenities on the resettlement land,” said Ggoobi, adding that UGX 125 billion is required to manage disasters in the Elgon and Rwenzori regions effectively.
During an emergency meeting convened by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, it was resolved that relocating people at risk communities is no longer negotiable. “We must prioritize saving lives. All people in disaster-prone areas will be relocated immediately,” Nabbanja said.
The government plans to allocate two acres of land and UGX 10 million to each affected household. The vacated land will be reforested and converted into national parks under the Ministry of Tourism to prevent future disasters.
Dr. Doreen Agaba, Head of Uganda Space Programme, has been tasked to provide satellite images of the affected areas within 24 hours to assist in disaster management.
Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees Hillary Onek revealed that 10,000 acres of land have been identified for resettlement. "We will provide food for the resettled families for six months as they establish their livelihoods," said Onek.
Nabbanja emphasized that the new settlements will be planned to include schools, health centers, and other social services to avoid slum-like conditions.
The Mount Elgon region has a history of devastating landslides, including incidents in Bududa District that killed hundreds and displaced thousands.
Nabbanja said government’s proactive measures aim to prevent further tragedies and build resilience among affected communities.
