The government, through the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA), has distributed 56 moisture meters worth Shs672 million to farmers, processors, and traders. This initiative is part of efforts to improve the quality of Uganda's key agricultural exports, coffee and cocoa.
Of the 56 moisture meters, 38 were provided by UCDA, while 18 were acquired through the EU-funded Cocoa and Coffee Development Project (CoCoDev). These tools are essential in enhancing post-harvest handling, ensuring that Uganda's coffee and cocoa meet international standards.
Fred Bwino Kyakulaga, Uganda’s Minister of State for Agriculture, emphasised the importance of the initiative. “This government’s distribution of moisture meters is crucial in our efforts to improve post-harvest handling and quality assurance," he said. He further noted that maintaining proper moisture levels boosts product value, reduces losses, and keeps Uganda competitive in global markets.
UCDA’s Acting Managing Director, Eunice Kabibi, urged recipients to use the moisture meters effectively. She explained, “These meters help monitor moisture content. For export grades, the standard is a maximum of 12.5%.” Kabibi stressed the need for compliance with these standards to maintain Uganda’s reputation for high-quality exports.
The distribution of these moisture meters is a significant step towards boosting the integrity and market value of Uganda's coffee and cocoa, reinforcing the country's growing international recognition for its quality products.
