Ugandan peacekeepers with the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) marked their country’s 62nd Independence Day in a vibrant ceremony in Mogadishu. The event was graced by dignitaries including Somalia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Fardowsa Osman Egal, and Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail. ATMIS Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Sam Kavuma, and Acting UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan, were also in attendance.

The Ugandan Deputy Ambassador to Somalia, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Nathan Mugisha, hosted the event, where Ahmed Fiqi, the chief guest, praised Uganda’s contribution to peace in the region. "Uganda has been a beacon of hope, providing invaluable support to Somalia through ATMIS since 2007," said Fiqi, lauding Uganda’s efforts in stabilising Somalia.

Lt. Gen. Kavuma commended Ugandan troops for their dedication to the mission. “With 4,026 soldiers, Uganda remains one of the largest contributors to ATMIS, playing a key role in Somalia’s journey to peace and security,” he noted. He also paid tribute to the fallen Ugandan soldiers, calling them "true African heroes."

The ceremony, held under the theme “A Re-commitment to Secure and Fortify Our Destiny,” featured cultural performances that showcased Uganda’s rich heritage. Maj. Gen. Mugisha reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to fostering peace and development through regional organisations such as the African Union and East African Community.

James Swan also acknowledged Uganda’s significant role, emphasising how their military and diplomatic efforts have bolstered Somalia’s security gains, allowing for increased humanitarian and developmental support in the country.
