Ugandans have taken to social media to mourn the passing of former Presidential Press Secretary Onapito Ekomoloit, who died on Friday morning, September 7.
Ekomoloit, who served as a one-term MP for Amuria, left a lasting impression in politics, journalism, and business.
Seasoned journalist and businessman Andrew Mwenda, who was taught by the late Ekomoloit and also worked with him, expressed his sorrow on X: “I’ve heard the news of the death of Onapito Ekomoloit with sadness. He was my lecturer at MUK, editor at Monitor, friend, and fellow panelist on KFM’s Hot Seat. A brilliant intellectual with a realistic approach to politics, he inspired us all with his wit. May his soul RIP.”
Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among also paid tribute on X: “I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our brother Onapito Ekomoloit. He was a journalist of excellence, a former Press Secretary to the President, and a former MP. His honest and humble contributions to our country speak for themselves. My heartfelt sympathies go out to H.E. @KagutaMuseveni, his family, friends, the press fraternity, the Nile Breweries family, and the Teso community. May his soul rest in peace.”
Ekomoloit’s distinguished career began in journalism at The Monitor (now Daily Monitor), where he was a senior reporter. He later founded his own media outlet, The Crusader.
Following his stint as Presidential Press Secretary, a role later assumed by Tamale Mirundi, Ekomoloit transitioned to the corporate sector. He became Director for Corporate Affairs at Nile Breweries, Uganda's leading beer manufacturer. Upon his retirement, he continued to serve the company as Board Chairman until his untimely death.
