Bunyoro is upbeat ahead of the 25th Coronation Anniversary of Omukama Solomon Gafabusa Iguru, due on Tuesday June 11.

Iguru was enthroned on June 11, 1994 following restoration of kingdoms by the NRM government. In the run up to the annual cultural event locally known as Empango, Bunyoro is now a beehive of activity as preparations are in advanced stages.

Since the beginning of June the king has been visiting districts, reaching out to his subjects. On Saturday he flagged off the Empango Marathon as hundreds of subjects took part in the run meant to raise funds to buy a Blood Analyzer for Kiryandongo hospital.

Organized by a local radio station Spice FM, the marathon was graced by Olympic Marathon Champion Stephen Kiprotich. Other activities include a clan football tournament and boat cruising competitions on Lake Albert among others.

The Palace and Kingdom chambers in Hoima town have also been given a major facelift as part of the preparation, while individual subjects, politicians and corporate companies are giving in financial contribution to support the event budgeted to cost a whooping Sh600million.

On Saturday members of Bunyoro Parliamentary Caucus handed in a contribution of Sh10million. Led by the Caucus Chairperson who is also Buliisa Member of Parliament Steven Mukitale Birahwa, the Members of Parliament also reaffirmed their commitment to work with the Kingdom to address issues affecting the region.

The Kingdom Spokesperson Francis Mugerwa says they expect about 20 kings and other cultural leaders from Uganda and abroad to grace the event. The king will on Monday attend a thanksgiving service at St Peters Cathedral, the seat of Bunyoro Kitara Diocese.

President Museveni is expected grace the event at Karuziika Palace on Tuesday.
