Major General Jack Bakasumba, Chief of Joint Staff of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has commended the Indian Armed Forces for their continued support in military training and strategic cooperation with Uganda.
Speaking at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) Headquarters in Mbuya, Maj Gen Bakasumba praised the Indian military for its contribution to building UPDF capacity. He was officiating at the farewell of four Indian officers who completed a two-year mission in Uganda.
“Thank you for the training support you are giving us. We truly appreciate it and do not take it for granted. A friend in need is a friend indeed,” said Maj Gen Bakasumba.
The departing officers served in key UPDF departments, including Operations, Communications, and the Air Force. They were based at the Senior Command and Staff College in Kimaka, where they provided instruction and technical guidance.
Brigadier General Bhupendra Singh, who led the team, expressed appreciation for the collaboration and logistical support received during their deployment.
“On behalf of the people of India, I would like to express our gratitude for all the assistance we received from the Office of the Chief of Joint Staff during our stay here,” said Brig Gen Singh.
The meeting also focused on strengthening bilateral defence ties, particularly in areas of advanced training and infrastructure development. A new team of Indian officers is expected to arrive in Uganda later this month to continue the mission.
Uganda and India have a longstanding defence partnership that includes joint training initiatives, professional exchanges, and the deployment of Indian military teams to support UPDF operations.
