The government will create a dedicated fund to support fishermen, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has announced.
During a visit to Titus Tumusiime’s farm in Buliisa District, Museveni acknowledged that the Parish Development Model (PDM) funding is insufficient for fishermen to acquire essential equipment.
“The fishermen’s tools, such as boats and fishing nets, are expensive. The PDM money isn’t enough for them to purchase these tools. And so, we shall create other funds for them,” Museveni said.
He scheduled a meeting with fishing community leaders in May to discuss the details of the fund.
Museveni, who is touring Bunyoro to assess the progress of the PDM, commended Tumusiime for being a model farmer. He donated Shs10 million for him to purchase a tuk-tuk for transporting pig feeds and Shs25 million for a grinder.
Mr Titus Tumusiime, the first PDM beneficiary I visited this morning in Butiaba Sub County, Buliisa District, used the funds he obtained to start a piggery project. I am happy to learn that despite some challenges, he has moved qualitatively from zero to 16 pigs. We pledge to… pic.twitter.com/uZwSibBwJp

During the visit, Museveni also addressed concerns about the Butebengwa Kingship in Bugungu, assuring leaders that he has no issue with its establishment. He promised to mediate discussions between the Butebengwa leadership and the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom.
Allan Atugonza (Buliisa County) briefed the President on the Butebengwa Kingship, stating that its approval process is complete and awaiting gazettement by the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development.
On the issue of lake management, Museveni urged local leaders to take an active role in resolving conflicts over Lake Albert. He pledged to convene a stakeholders' meeting in May to address the concerns.
Atugonza praised Museveni for poverty alleviation initiatives like the PDM, saying they have improved livelihoods.
Tumusiime, a beneficiary of the program, credited PDM for transforming his household income. He revealed that he invested his Shs997,000 PDM grant into pig farming, eventually earning Shs4.3 million from selling piglets.
The visit was attended by ministers, Members of Parliament, and local leaders.
