The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has confirmed new dates for the election of the Party’s top Central Executive Committee (CEC) members.
NRM Secretary General, Justine Kasule Lumumba said that the National Executive Council meeting comprising delegates to NEC in the respective districts will meet on 18th August to 20th August 2020. Lumumba said that unlike before where Delegates conference would be held at Namboole, this 3rd National Conference will be decentralised to about 30 interactive zones in line with COVID-19 guidelines.
“The national delegates in the respective districts will be held on 20th August where they will elect the 9 Executive Committee members and the Presidential flag bearer by resolution by circulation, and there will be assembling of members,” Lumumba said, adding that voting will take place from 9am to 3pm.
“Each candidate will be entitled to two agents after voting, and counting of votes will be done by the District registrar in the presence of the agents, District NRM Chairperson and Administrative secretary,” she said.
This was during an inaugural weekly media briefing at the NRM Head Quarters where the party leadership will be constantly updating the public with ongoing Party activities ahead of 2021 polls. Lumumba was accompanied by her deputy Richard Todwong and state minister for ICT Peter Ogwang.
The election for top NRM CEC members was initially slated for last Friday before it was postponed. The top positions that are currently up for elections are; Party chairperson, first national vice chairperson, the second national vice chairperson (female) and the six regional vice chairpersons.
The current holders of these top nine positions in NRM are; President Museveni, the national chairperson, Moses Kigongo, first national vice chairperson, Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, the second national vice chairperson. The regional vice chairpersons; Capt Mike Mukula for eastern region, Maj Gen (Rtd) Matayo Kyaligonza for western region, Sam Engola for northern region, Abdul Nadduli for central region, Godfrey Nyakana for Kampala region, and Simon Peter Aleper for Karamoja region. Lumumba said that elections for other NRM CEC positions will be announced.
Lumumba called upon law enforcement officers to ensure that the stipulated guidelines are compiled with. She also condemned any form of bribery, utterances of any sectarian statements and use of inappropriate language.
In response to recent videos circulating on social media of Ministers violating Special Operating Procedures (SOPs) on COVID-19, State minister for ICT Peter Ogwang said that "no person is above the law and that everybody including Ministers should operate within the confers of the law and guidelines."
