Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has paid tribute to fallen former Kenyan President Daniel Arap Moi saying he was such a good neighbour.
In her condolence message, Kadaga said that Arap Moi was a friend to Uganda and played a pivotal role in the revival of the much cherished East African Community.
“We salute Mzee Moi for having been a good neighbour and provided sanctuary to several Ugandans whose lives were in grave danger. And above all, we salute him for enhancing trade and political co-existence between our two nations,” Kadaga said.
During his reign between 1992 and 2002, Uganda witnessed several regime changes amidst political turbulence that saw many flee to exile. The former Kenyan President was the second leader of Independent Kenya. He died on Monday morning aged 95.
Born on 2 September 1924 into a farming family, he was a close ally of Kenyatta in the run-up to Kenyan independence in 1963. He served as home affairs minister from 1964 and in 1967 he became the country's vice-president. Until the introduction of multi-party politics, Moi was elected unopposed as president in 1983 and 1988. He survived a coup attempt in 1982, which led to a brutal crackdown on his opponents.
