The Embassy of the Republic of Uganda in Beijing, together with the Consulate General in Guangzhou, hosted a colourful celebration to mark Uganda’s 63rd Independence Anniversary, highlighting the country’s cultural heritage, tourism potential, and strong partnership with the People’s Republic of China.
The event, held in Beijing, brought together diplomats, business leaders, members of the international community, and the Ugandan diaspora in a vibrant evening that blended culture with diplomacy. It was officiated by Her Excellency Ambassador Oliver Wonekha, Uganda’s Ambassador to China, and Her Excellency Judyth Nsababera Muthoni, Consul General in Guangzhou. The Chief Guest was Ambassador Lei Kezhong, Director of the Department of African Affairs at China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In her remarks, Ambassador Wonekha applauded Uganda’s steady progress since independence and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation with China. “This celebration is not just about our past; it is a statement of our future,” she said. “Uganda is open for business, open for tourism, and proud to share its unique story with the world. We are deeply grateful for the support and friendship of the Chinese government and people.”
A key highlight of the celebration was a Tourism and Coffee Promotion event held at the historic Badaling Great Wall, themed “Discover Uganda – The Pearl of Africa.” The showcase featured Ugandan coffee tasting sessions, exhibitions of locally made products, and traditional performances by a Ugandan cultural troupe.
The performances, marked by energetic drumming and colorful attire, captivated guests and reflected Uganda’s rich artistic identity. The coffee segment attracted special attention from Chinese guests and investors eager to explore Uganda’s high-quality Arabica and Robusta beans.
The celebration also provided a platform to strengthen business and cultural ties, with participants exploring new opportunities in tourism, trade, and investment between Uganda and China.
The event concluded with guests praising Uganda’s cultural diversity, scenic beauty, and economic potential — reaffirming its place as The Pearl of Africa.
