A delegation from the Forum of Parliamentarians in the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (PF-ICGLR) is in Uganda for a fact-finding mission on peace and security in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Led by Zambia’s National Assembly Speaker and PF-ICGLR President, Nelly Mutti Butete, the delegation met President Yoweri Museveni to discuss the challenges in the Great Lakes region, particularly in DRC, and explore solutions.

“It is sabotage for the entire continent to fail to resolve the challenges in our region,” Museveni said.

Uganda reaffirms commitment to regional peace

Welcoming the delegation at Parliament on March 10, 2025, Speaker Anita Among commended their dedication to peace and reaffirmed Uganda’s support for African-led solutions to the continent’s challenges.

“As Africans, we have always agreed that African problems can only be solved locally. Moving from one country to another, meeting heads of state to find the best way to achieve peace, is a commendable initiative,” she said.

Among stressed that peace in DRC is key to regional stability, noting that Uganda remains actively engaged in PF-ICGLR and meets its financial obligations.

Butete outlined the mission’s objectives, highlighting the need for regional leadership in conflict resolution.

“This is the fourth phase on issues relating to peace and security in the Eastern DRC,” she said, adding, “Without peace, we cannot interact, and even regional integration cannot prosper. Peace is a precursor to development.”

She urged African nations to take charge of their security concerns and limit external intervention.

“We don’t want to invite outsiders to handle our affairs when we have responsible leaders who can ensure peace and stability,” she said.

The delegation’s findings will be presented to the PF-ICGLR plenary in April for further discussion. As Butete nears the end of her term, she emphasised the need for tangible progress before the leadership transition to Angola.

Uganda remains a key advocate for regional peace and security, pushing for home-grown solutions to Africa’s challenges.
