The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has opened an investigation into a shooting involving soldiers attached to Foreign Affairs Minister General (rtd) Jeje Odongo, in which a civilian lost his life in the recently concluded elections held in January.
The probe follows an incident on January 1, 2026, in Orungo County, Amuria District, where a civilian named Saidi Eteru was shot dead and at least five others sustained injuries during a night gathering at a local trading centre.
The incident reportedly involved supporters of Gen. Odongo and those of Teddy Anyuk Osire, the National Resistance Movement flag bearer in the area.
Gen. Odongo, who represents Orungo County, was running as an independent after losing the NRM primaries in July 2025.
Following the incident, Amuria Resident District Commissioner Paul Eseru told the media that the soldiers attached to the minister arrived at the gathering and opened fire. He then promised that the matter would be handled through joint security coordination.
Highly placed sources told this publication that the UPDF has taken a keen interest in the case, noting that ‘decisive action will be taken once investigations are complete.’
It should be noted that retired military general Odongo is a former army commander of the UPDF and long serving minister in the NRM government.
The recently concluded general elections in the country were hailed by many local and regional observers as peaceful and calm, except for a few isolated incidents of violence in some areas that were quickly contained by the security forces.
