The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Air Force has passed out 33 personnel after completing an Air Defence Operations Officers Course, boosting the force’s capacity to secure national airspace.
The training was conducted at the Air Operations and Command Centre in Entebbe, focusing on strengthening operational readiness and command capabilities.
Presiding over the ceremony, Brig Gen Allan Kalanzi, Commandant of the Air Force College, emphasized the importance of training in military effectiveness.
“In the military, training is one of the most important activities after operations. Its ultimate aim is to prepare individuals and units for success in operations,” Brig Gen Kalanzi said.
He urged the graduates to uphold discipline and professionalism in their duties. He warned against corruption and what he termed “allowance nomadism.”
Brig Gen Kalanzi said the Air Force remains focused on strengthening operational readiness through continuous training, while addressing challenges related to infrastructure, personnel, and welfare.
The Commander of the Air Operations and Command Centre, Lt Col Benon Byakureme, described the course as a key milestone in professional development.
“This course reflects the commitment of both the trainees and the institution to excellence in operational readiness. The officers have been prepared to operate within the complex air defence and AOCC environment,” Lt Col Byakureme said.
He added that the training enhances the Air Force’s ability to manage airspace surveillance and command systems.
Outstanding trainees were recognized during the ceremony. Maj Richard Tayebwa received the best leadership award, Lt Vincent Abitegeka was named best team player, Sgt Byaruhanga Godfrey emerged best overall student, and Pte Kinyeera Moses excelled in practical operations.
Senior Air Force officers, including the Director Human Resource Air Force, Brig Gen Richard Rubongoya, DHRM-SFC, Col Mango Baraza and the Deputy Commander Personnel and Administration Air Force and Commander AOCC, Lt Col Benon Byakureme, attended the event alongside other serving and retired personnel.
