The Uganda Cranes’ remarkable journey at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) ended on Saturday evening after a narrow 1-0 defeat to defending champions Senegal in the quarterfinals at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

A 62nd-minute strike from Oumar Ba settled the tense contest, but it did not overshadow Uganda’s resilience and spirited fight before a passionate home crowd.

The first half offered few clear chances, with both goalkeepers, Joel Mutakubwa for Uganda and Marc Philips Arona Diouf for Senegal, rarely tested as the game turned into a tactical duel. Senegal’s breakthrough came when Libasse Guèye broke down the flank and set up Ba for a clinical finish.

Uganda responded with intensity, urged on by their fans. Substitute Kiza Usama came close in the dying minutes after a goalmouth scramble, but his effort sailed over the bar. Arnold Odong and Usama Arafat also missed late opportunities as the Cranes pressed for an equalizer.

Despite the result, the Cranes made history by reaching the quarterfinals for the first time in seven attempts. Their campaign included a dramatic 3-3 draw with South Africa and emphatic victories over Guinea and Niger, inspiring pride across the country.

The team also suffered setbacks, including an injury to Jude Ssemugabi, but their performance reflected discipline, growth, and determination under coach Morley Byekwaso.

Uganda’s exit, alongside fellow co-hosts Kenya and Tanzania at the same stage, marked a bittersweet end for East African teams. Still, the Cranes’ journey stands out as a defining moment for Ugandan football.
