Uganda and the Russian Federation have reaffirmed their long-standing diplomatic partnership as Moscow prepares to host the third Russia-Africa Summit later this year.
Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Gen. Jeje Odongo Abubakhar, met with the Chargé d’Affaires of the Russian Federation to Uganda, Mr. Sergey Lobanov, on Friday to discuss expanding cooperation in education, trade, and regional security.
During the meeting, Russia formally invited Uganda to the Third Russia–Africa Summit. The high-level event will take place in Moscow on October 28–29, 2026. This summit serves as a primary platform for Russia to engage with African leaders on technology transfer, investment, and international peace.
Educational Growth and Scholarships
A key highlight of the bilateral discussion centered on academic development. The Russian delegation acknowledged an official request from Uganda to increase the number of scholarships available to Ugandan students for the 2026–2027 academic year.
This request aligns with a shared goal to improve skills development and academic exchange between the two nations. Currently, both governments are working to finalize the expansion of these opportunities.
A Shared Commitment
Both officials emphasized the "warm and longstanding relations" that define the connection between Kampala and Moscow.
"Both parties expressed their shared commitment to sustained diplomatic engagement and to further deepening bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of the peoples and governments of Uganda and the Russian Federation," the meeting report stated.
The dialogue underscored a partnership that spans multiple strategic sectors. Leaders expect the upcoming Moscow summit to further solidify these ties through new trade agreements and educational pacts.
