Uganda, Algeria Deepen Ties with Trade and Health Projects

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (International Affairs), Oryem Henry Okello, on Monday met Amokrane Mourad, the Algerian Ambassador to Uganda, to discuss ways of strengthening bilateral cooperation.

The meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters highlighted growing trade between the two countries. Oryem welcomed Uganda’s expanding exports to Algeria, noting that 400 tonnes of powdered milk have already been supplied alongside coffee, with four Ugandan companies actively engaged in the trade.

Ambassador Mourad praised Uganda’s participation in the upcoming Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025) in Algeria, where Ugandan products and innovations will be showcased.

The two officials also reviewed progress on a new Memorandum of Understanding signed between their Ministers of Finance. The agreement will enable the extension of Katakwi Hospital, with construction expected to begin in four months.

In addition, they discussed Algerian scholarship opportunities for Ugandan students, which both sides said would further enhance people-to-people ties.

Oryem and Ambassador Mourad reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in trade, health, and education, emphasizing mutual benefit for the citizens of Uganda and Algeria.
