Gen Elwelu to Lead Team to Resolve Regional Cattle Thefts
The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among has nominated Lt Gen Peter Elwelu, the Army Representative to lead a team of Members of Parliament to resolve security concerns in different parts of the country.
While chairing plenary on Thursday, Among was cognizant of the ongoing pockets of insecurity marred by rampant cattle thefts in the sub regions of Teso, Karamoja, Sebei, Lango and Acholi that has resulted in loss of lives.
Subsequently, she has deployed the Committee on Defence and Internal Affairs to meet all the MPs from the respective sub regions before she dispatches a team to the ground to engage the locals for peace and harmony to prevail.
“The chairperson of Committee on Defence and Internal Affairs has invited all MPs of Teso, Karamoja, Sebei, Lango and Acholi parliamentary groups to harmonize on security matters of the regions. And if it means going to the ground, I would want Gen Elwelu to take the lead especially on security matters,” Among said. Elwelu is also a member of the committee on defence.
She added, “Let us get a lasting solution for whatever is happening in Karamoja, Teso, Sebei, Lango and Acholi and this solution can be got by ourselves, we don’t need external people.”
According to the Deputy Speaker, the first ‘security’ meeting of the committee on Defence and the MPs will take place today, 04 March 2022 at 2pm in the Parliamentary Conference Hall before she dispatches the team to different regions.
