Uganda will hold an event to expose her processed coffee to the people in the UK, which imports about $1 billion worth of coffee annually.

The cupping/tasting event will be held on October 27 at WeRoast, Unit 19 Newington Industrial Estate, 87 Crampton Street, London, according to Julius Peter Moto, Uganda’s high commissioner to the UK and Ireland.

The Uganda High Commission in London is partnering with Uganda Coffee Development Authority, the British High Commission in Kampala, and various coffee processors in Uganda.

“This is in line with Uganda Vision 2040 that focuses on value addition for exports hence more jobs and incomes for Ugandans in the value chain,” Moto said in a Monday statement.

Uganda is the second-largest producer of coffee in Africa and currently ranks 7th in the World.

"I officially endorse that Ugandan coffee is the best in the world," Kate Airey, the UK envoy in Kampala said this past week.

According to Peter Moto, the event will “be followed by a marketing strategy to get Uganda Coffee on to the UK market, coffee shops and supermarkets.”

“With the planned commencement of direct flights between Entebbe International Airport and London Heathrow by Uganda Airlines around November 2021, we expect trade volumes between the two countries to increase on account of reduced cargo costs hence making Uganda's exports to the UK more competitive,” he added.

Uganda picked up $75.09 million (about Shs265 billion) after exporting 700,990 bags of coffee weighing 60kgs each in August. According to UCDA, this was an increase of 34.89% and 63.06% in quantity and value respectively compared to the same month last year.

The East African nation exported 636,458 bags of Robusta valued at $65.24 million and 64.532 bags of Arabica valued at $9.85million in August.

Comparing year-over-year growth, 6.41 million bags worth $607.81m were exported from September 2020 to August 2021 compared to 5.22 million bags worth $502.24m that were sold from September 2019 to August 2020. “This represents an increase of 23% and 21% in both quantity and value respectively,” UCDA said
