President Yoweri Museveni has said he wants the new cabinet to focus on five areas of socio-economic development in order to facilitate growth in civil service.

“I congratulate all the ministers who took the oath and have started work,” the president said in a statement.

“Going forward, our focus will be on five key factors: ensure cohesion, fight corruption, promote the integration of the East African Community, Patriotism, and efficient service delivery to our people.”

On June 8, President Museveni announced a new cabinet, comprised of 31 cabinet ministers and 50 state ministers.

He also made a first by appointing Robinah Nabbanja as the first female prime minister. She replaced Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, who is now a special envoy for special duties in the Office of the President.

This new cabinet also saw a rise in female composition, with 35 women as compared to 26 ministers in the 2011-2016 government.

Women also occupy the top three positions, with Jessica Alupo as vice president, Prime Minister Nabbanja) and 1st Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga.
