Parliament Staff Relocated to Sudhir’s Kingdom Kampala Building
Parliament has started relocating some of its staff to city tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia’s Kingdom Kampala building.
With effect from 2nd September, 2021, parliamentary staff have been directed to relocate to the Kingdom Kampala building on Nile Avenue.
According to a communication from the Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesige, the move to relocate staff is intended to “secure offices for the leadership of Committees, Members of Parliament with Disabilities, Elderly Members of Parliament and also add on the number of Committee rooms.”
For years now, Parliament has been grappling with office space to accommodate the rising number of Members of Parliament and staff. As a result, the Parliamentary Commission decided to rent office space at the nearby Kingdom Kampala building for its MPs for a period of at least two years. Parliament is expected to part with Shs800m as rent per month which translates to Shs 19.2 billion for 2years. Most of the MPs have however, rejected the move to shift to Kingdom Kampala building, prompting the Commission to allocate this space to the staff.
Among the staff who are expected to relocate are those who have been occupying former committee rooms. These include staff from the Department of Litigation and Compliance, General Counsel to Parliament and Communication and Public Affairs.
Other staff who are expected to shift this Thursday include; staff from Department of Clerks, Budget Office, Corporate Planning and Strategy, Research Services, Legislative and Procedural Services and Administrative and Transport Logistics. This excludes Directors and Assistant Directors of the respective departments.
Clerk to Parliament has also directed that the Protocol Officers who have been occupying Office 114 on 1st floor South Wing be allocated another office within the main building to make that space available for Board Room meetings. This temporal arrangement is expected to last until the completion of the construction of the Shs200billion Parliament chambers.
