Police Arrests Gen. Katumba Attackers, One Killed

According to Gen. Lokech, the attackers were recruited by Sheik Abudin, who has been linked to  ADF (Allied Democratic Forces), the rebel group that has operated in Eastern DR Congo since the 1990s.

Police has arrested three and killed one of the suspects linked to the attack of Minister of Works and Transport Gen Katumba Wamala, Maj. Gen. Paul Lokech, the deputy IGP, said in a Thursday media briefing.

The minister’s car was sprayed with bullets on the morning of June 1. His daughter Brenda Nanyonjo and driver Haruna Kayondo died on the spot. He sustained injuries.

According to the deputy IGP, Hussein Wahab Lubwama was killed as he tried to resist arrest.

Also known as Master, Lubwama ejected the bullets that Killed Gen. Katumba’s daughter.

A resident of Kabulengwa, Kyebando in Nansana Municipality, Lubwama who is said to have been the team leader -- was arrested along Nansana Nabweru road. 

He was killed as he tried to grab a gun from an officer.

Gen. Lokech displayed pictures from the encounter with the criminals and also walked the newsmen through some of the CCTV footage that police used to track the criminals.

The other suspect has been identified as Mundika, born Walusimbi Kamada – and he rode the bike that had Kanaabe (another name not given) who shot Gen Katumba.

The third suspect, Muhammad Kagugube aka Bafumoya did the surveillance and alerted the killers. The killers hid the guns at the house of Kisambira Siriman alias Mukwasi. He was also arrested.

They were later to transferred to the home of Mustafa Kawawa Ramadan alias Amin alias Musa.

Amin resides in Maganjo 'B' LC1, Seruwumba Sub-zone, Maganjo Parish in Nabweru Division.

According to Gen. Lokech, the attackers were recruited by Sheik Abudin, who has been linked to  ADF (Allied Democratic Forces), the rebel group that has operated in Eastern DR Congo since the 1990s.

The Sheik is on the run.

"We are continuing to break the cells of these attackers. The mastermind of all these attacks and the cell in Kampala of ADF ... is Sheikh Abudin Hubaida Taheel Bukenya, an ex-ADF combatant,” Gen Lokech said.

"He could either be here or in Eastern DRC… All these groups are linked to ADF which is operating in Eastern DRC.”

At Amin’s home, police found items used to make bombs, guiding manuals, military materials, secret communication codes, and several Western Union transfer receipts from foreign services.

They also recovered a black helmet, 10 jackets, and one of the motorcycles used in the planning, preparation, and execution of the plot.

"You'll never spill the blood of innocent Ugandans and get away with it," Gen Lokech said. “No crime with impunity will go unpunished."

He said that the suspects are part of the team that trained in the North Kivu ADF camp and had started reactivating the domestic terror cells in the country.
