The Police on Saturday evening shot at armed robbers, killing one and injuring the other at Total Nsambya, which is owned by former FDC Leader, Kizza Besigye.
Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga says the third robber was arrested and a gun recovered. “Yesterday evening, 22/06/2019 at around 8 pm, detectives from the Flying Squad Unit, in an intelligence-led operation, shot at two suspected armed robbers, killing one instantly and wounding the other,” Enanga said in a statement.
“A third suspect, identified as David Okello, was arrested and is in police custody at Kabalagala Police station. The body of the deceased, only identified as Hamza, was transferred to the City Mortuary for post mortem analysis, while the injured suspect, identified as Rubanga Baruli was rushed to Mulago Hospital,” he added.
According to Enanga, the armed robbers, who approached the petrol station, from the side of Nsambya Hospital, disguised as customers at the petrol pump but were intercepted when one of them was heading to the supermarket.
“The detectives opened fire against them after they evaded arrest and attempted to flee from the scene. An SAR Rifle and a Toyota Premio, Silver in color, were recovered,” the Police Spokesperson explained. “The operation was highly risky and required quick action due to the potential of severe injuries and the collateral damage it could have caused,” he said.
Enanga reveals, “An investigative task team from the Regional Kampala Metropolitan South, Headquarters, is thoroughly reviewing and documenting the crime scene. They will further go on with inquiries to establish the motive of the suspects.” Besigye who confirmed the incident to journalists said that detectives first alerted employees of the impending operation and asked them to remain calm.
This is yet another achievement in police’s effort to rid the City of armed robbers who have killed several people and robbed millions of money of recent. The latest gun brings the total to four rifles recovered, while a number of suspects have been arrested in connection to City robberies in the last two weeks.
