Rwanda and Uganda Militaries Meet to Strengthen Cross Border Security
The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cross-border security and combating illegal activities along their shared border. In a meeting held in Mbarara District, Uganda on Saturday 31 August 2024, top military officials from both nations discussed strategies to address challenges faced by border communities and prevent cross-border crimes.
The RDF delegation was led by Maj Gen Vincent Nyakarundi, the Army Chief of Staff, while the UPDF was represented by Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, UPDF Land Forces Commander. The meeting emphasized collaboration and coordination in maintaining peace along the border.
Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga highlighted the importance of ongoing cooperation and dialogue. "Under the guidance of H.E. Paul Kagame and H.E. Yoweri Museveni, we have held various meetings to address security challenges along the border. This initiative will foster harmony between our nations and promote social transformation and prosperity," said Lt Gen Muhanga.
Maj Gen Nyakarundi, speaking on behalf of the RDF Chief of Defence Staff, expressed appreciation for the UPDF's efforts in curbing cross-border crimes. He pledged continued coordination with the UPDF to tackle illegal activities and violent extremism in the region.
In a recent visit, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), met with his counterpart, Gen Mubarakh Muganga, Chief of Defence Staff of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), at the RDF Headquarters in Kigali, Rwnada in August 2024.
Similarly, Gen Mubarakh Muganga, Chief of Defence Staff of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), also visited Uganda where he met CDF of Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) among other high level military delegations. The visits are aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation.
It should also be noted that a similar meeting was held in May 2024 in Nyagatare District, Rwanda. All these meetings mark a positive step toward strengthening bilateral relations between Rwanda and Uganda, ensuring the safety and security of their citizens.
