Progress

Having been abolished after the 1966 attack on Lubiri that led to the exile of the then Kabaka Edward Muteesa II and a subsequent abrogation of the 1962 Constitution, the kingdom had almost lost hope for its revival.

However, the Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II was enthroned as king of Buganda in 1993, a few years after the National Resistance Movement (NRM) had taken power.

The NRM restored and recognized various kingdoms in addition to upholding and promoting cultural values at different levels of governance.

This followed the amendment of the constitution to legally recognize kingdoms and other cultural institutions.

This consequently paved the way for the coronation of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II who became the Kabaka of Buganda in 1993. Since then, many more kingdoms have been recognized and kings enthroned.
